Just kidding. It was more like one guy in a freezer section.
After a successful exit from their start-up venture Bear Naked Granola, Brendan Synnott and Tom Spier left the East Coast and headed to the slopes of Colorado. In 2009 Tom ran across a pretty interesting product that was being made in Boulder, so he gave his pal Brendan a ring (who was just getting back from another adventure as a contestant on Survivor: Tocantins).
“Brendan, you won’t believe these frozen burritos,” Tom said to Brendan. “They’re actually good. Like, for eating.”
“I LOVE burritos!” Brendan replied. “Who doesn’t love a good burrito? Tell me more.” Brendan, always excited for a new challenge, was looking for his next soon-to-be wildly successful natural food brand.
Phil Anson of Phil’s Fresh Foods was responsible for these all-natural treasures of burritos deliciousness. So, the guys decided to track down Phil.
Phil’s story was beyond intriguing… the young entrepreneur started selling his homemade burritos out of a cooler to fellow climbers in Colorado’s Eldorado Canyon — mostly to fulfill the glorious dream of living as a hardly-employed climber. But, as is often the case with entrepreneurial types, Phil’s burritos were so tasty that he ended up with a legitimate business on his hands.
Ten years and a few million burritos later, in walk Brendan and Tom.
The boys from Bear Naked took a look in every nook and cranny of Phil’s operation, and all they saw was awesomeness — inspiring, nice folks making natural products with tasty ingredients. Add to that Phil’s dogged commitment to running things green. From the extensive composting to the compulsive recycling, you might say Phil was a little zero-waste obsessed.
So Brendan and Tom kumbaya’d with Phil until a merging was met in the spring of 2009. After a little reflecting on all this burrito love, a new and seemingly obvious brand was born — EVOL (love backwards).
Today, EVOL is known for a superstar cast of burritos and have expanded into meals, flatbreads and pizzas. Don’t be surprised if you start seeing EVOL in your best friend’s freezer, wrapped in foil at yo mama’s house or on your officemate’s desk, enticing you at lunchtime.
EVOL Foods. Love what you eat!
